Toluca vs Santos Laguna – Jornada 8 Recap and Highlights

Toluca remained unbeaten at home this season with a 2-0 win against 10-man Santos Laguna. The result snaps a five-game unbeaten streak for the Laguneros, who lost the opportunity to move into first place in the table.

The Diablos Rojos took the lead in the 14th minute, when Rubens Sambueza found some space and sent in a cross for Fernando Uribe, whose header made it 1-0 for Toluca.

Santos looked for a response, and league-leading goalscorer Djaniny had an opportunity in the 10th minute, but Alfredo Talavera made the kick-save.

That was the visitors’ only chance of note in the first half, while Toluca had several opportunities to add to their lead. Jonathan Orozco was kept busy in goal as he made a number of saves to keep Santos within touching distance.

But in the second half, Toluca was able to add an insurance goal. In the 50th minute, Sambueza once again assisted Uribe, who got his head to a free kick to make it 2-0 for the hosts.

The game ended on a sour note for Santos, as substitute Cris Martínez was given a straight red card in stoppage time for a foul on Rodrigo Salinas.

With the 2-0 win, Toluca reaches 12 points while Santos still has 14.
