A late goal gave Querétaro the 0-1 away win against Cruz Azul, who failed to convert a penalty kick during the match. The result keeps La Máquina winless at home this season and winless in eight overall, while the Gallos Blancos snapped a three-game winless streak of their own.
Cruz Azul controlled possession at the start as they looked to get back on track in front of their home fans. They created a number of opportunities, but they were stopped time and again by Tiago Volpi and Querétaro’s defense.
In the second half, a controversial penalty kick was awarded in the 49th minute after Gerardo Flores was fouled in the box; Querétaro’s players protested vociferously due to the fact that Ángel Mena had handled the ball in the buildup to that play.
The referee nevertheless pointed to the spot, and Francisco Silva stepped up to take the penalty. However, it was saved by Volpi to keep the game 0-0.
Querétaro then took the lead in the 81st minute with a well-executed counterattack. Camilo Sanvezzo’s shot took a helpful deflection off Enzo Roco to give the visitors the 0-1 lead.
With the 0-1 win, Querétaro reaches 12 points while Cruz Azul still has eight.
