Puebla missed a late penalty kick as Santos Laguna picked up a 0-1 away win. The result is a fourth straight victory for the Laguneros, who have guaranteed they will finish the week in first place in the table, while Puebla suffered their first home loss of the season and have now lost two in a row overall.
The visitors had the better of play in the first half, but Moisés Muñoz made a few saves to keep Santos off the board. Puebla’s defense stayed organized, but they could do little to generate good attacking opportunities of their own.
Santos continued to attack in the second half, with Julio César Furch looking particularly dangerous. He finally found the breakthrough in the 79th minute, when he headed home a corner kick to make it 0-1 for the visitors.
Puebla looked for an equalizer while Santos sent on Gerardo Alcoba to reinforce the defense as they looked to hold on to their lead. In the 85th minute, Alonso Escoboza went down in the box under pressure from Jorge Villafaña and the referee pointed to the spot.
Lucas Cavallini stepped up to take the penalty for Puebla, but he sent it soaring over the bar to maintain the 0-1 scoreline. Despite a late push, the tying goal remained elusive and Santos held on for the victory.
With the 0-1 win, Santos reaches 26 points while Puebla still has 17.
