Cruz Azul came out attacking as they looked to build on last weekend’s big win – and to take advantage of Pumas’ poor run of form. Felipe Mora had an early chance, but he sent his shot sailing over the crossbar.
Then, in the 10th minute, Pumas suffered a blow as Alejandro Arribas fell badly and injured his left arm/elbow, forcing the defender out of the game.
Despite that change to their backline, Pumas was able to keep the game goalless going into halftime, although Alfredo Saldívar had to make a few saves, most notably against Walter Montoya in the 21st minute.
Then, in the second half, the visitors took the lead. In the 52nd minute, Nicolás Castillo was fouled in the box by Gerardo Flores. Castillo himself stepped up to the spot to take the penalty, and he sent Jesús Corona the wrong way to make it 0-1 for Pumas.
Cruz Azul pressed for an equalizer, and they came close in the 82nd minute through Carlos Peña, but it wasn’t until stoppage time that they were able to find the breakthrough.
In the 94th minute, Enzo Roco headed home a corner kick to make it 1-1 in the final moments as he snatched a point for the hosts.
With the 1-1 draw, Cruz Azul reaches 12 points while Pumas reach 16.
