World Cup: Brazil vs Mexico – Recap and Highlights

Mexico bowed out of the 2018 World Cup with a 2-0 loss to Brazil in the Round of Sixteen. El Tri was trying to advance to the quarterfinals for the first time since 1986, but they ultimately came up short in their quest to reach the elusive “fifth game”.

The game started off well for Mexico, who took the game to Brazil. El Tri found success attacking down the wings, with Brazil’s outside backs having trouble dealing with Mexico’s speed. Hirving Lozano had an early opportunity after goalkeeper Alisson didn’t deal with a cross, but his second-minute shot was blocked.

Mexico was unable to find a goal while they were on the front foot, though, and by the half-hour mark the run of play had tilted in Brazil’s favor. Neymar and co. forced Guillermo Ochoa into several saves but the game remained deadlocked 0-0 at halftime.

Juan Carlos Osorio made a halftime substitution, with the aging Rafa Márquez coming off in favor of Miguel Layún, but it was Brazil who came out the stronger in the second period.

The opening goal came in the 51st minute through none other than Neymar, who started the play and then finished it as he knocked home a cross from Willian to make it 1-0.

Paulinho came close to adding an insurance goal for the Seleção just before the hour-mark, but Ochoa made a great save to deny him before tipping the follow-up by Willian over the bar.

Mexico went to the bench twice more in quick succession, but El Tri was unable to find a way back into the game. Brazilian substitute Roberto Firmino then sealed the victory with an 88th-minute goal to make it 2-0.

With the 2-0 win, Brazil advances to the quarterfinals while Mexico is eliminated.
