Monarcas Morelia earned their first victory of the season with a 3-1 win against Santos Laguna. The result gives the michoacanos back-to-back wins in all competitions, while the Laguneros saw their unbreaten start to the Apertura halted.
The first half saw both goalkeepers called into action with chances at either end. Morelia had the first opportunity of the game, but Carlos Acevedo was able to make the save. Later, Jonathan Rodríguez came close to opening the scoring for Santos, but Sebastián Sosa intervened.
The game remained goalless at halftime, but it didn’t take long for Morelia to take the lead after the restart. In the 51st minute, Carlos Fierro got free on the right wing and sent in a cross for Ray Sandoval, whose header beat Acevedo to make it 1-0 for the hosts.
Morelia came close to adding a second just minutes later, but the ball ended up nestling on the roof of the net instead of in it.
Then, in the 77th minute, Morelia earned a penalty kick after a foul in the box. Diego Valdés stepped up to take the spot kick, and he converted it to make it 2-0.
In the waning moments of the game, referee Fernando Guerrero pointed to the spot again and substitute Miguel Ángel Sansores made it 3-0 in the 88th minute.
Julio César Furch snatched a consolation goal for Santos in the last minute with his shot making it 3-1, but Santos couldn’t fight back any farther than that.
With the 3-1 win, Morelia reaches three points while Santos still has three.
