América vs Atlas – Jornada 2 Recap and Highlights

América earned their first win of the Apertura 2018 in style with a 3-0 thumping of Atlas. The result shows the Águilas are still hard to beat at home, while Atlas continues their poor road form and remains winless in the Apertura.

The Rojinegros started the game off well, though, as they controlled possession. But the visitors were unable to turn that possession into goals, while América struck from a set piece to take the lead.

In the 34th minute, Guido Rodríguez sent his volleyed effort into the upper corner following a mistake by Atlas goalkeeper José Hernández to give América the 1-0 lead.

That was the turning point for the hosts, who quickly added a second. In the 39th minute, Renato Ibarra got free on the right and took the ball to the end-line before finding Mateus Uribe, who made it 2-0 going into halftime.

Atlas made a halftime substitution as they looked to get back into the game, but instead América added a third goal shortly after the restart.

In the 53rd minute, another corner kick led to a goal, with Guido Rodríguez once again getting the final touch to put the Águilas comfortably ahead.

América, full of confidence, could easily have run the score up further with Andrés Ibargüen and Oribe Peralta having clear chances in the 56th and 79th minutes, respectively, but Hernández was able to make a pair of impressive saves to keep the scoreline from getting out of hand.

With the 3-0 win, América reaches three points while Atlas still has one.
