Lobos BUAP earned their first win of the season with a 2-0 defeat of Veracruz. The result is a second straight loss for the Tiburones Rojos, and a particularly painful one coming as it did against a relegation rival.
Veracruz nearly shot themselves in the foot early on, when Pedro Gallese got caught outside his box with the ball at his feet; Colin Kazim-Richards won the ball off the keeper but couldn’t take advantage of the empty net as his shot was off target.
In the 18th minute, the Tiburones Rojos again lost the ball while trying to play out of the back; Michaell Chirinos sent a cross in that Gallese got a hand to. The rebound fell to Kazim-Richards, but Gallese was able to intervene again to keep it 0-0.
Lobos continued to threaten, and they got their reward in the 45th minute. Abraham González sent in a cross and Kazim-Richards nodded it on for Mauro Lainez, whose first-time shot made it 1-0 for the Licántropos.
In the second half, Lobos kept the pressure on as they looked for an insurance goal, while the Sharks looked toothless in attack. The hosts came close to adding a second several times before finally finding it in stoppage time.
Diego Jiménez, who came on as a late sub, received the ball in midfield, got past two defenders to get into the box, and then sent his left-footed shot past Gallese to make it 2-0.
With the 2-0 win, Lobos reach three points while Veracruz still has zero.
