Apertura 2018 Week 4 Preview: Saturday’s Games

Lobos BUAP vs Atlas – 6:00 PM – Univision Deportes
Lobos BUAP (12th) fell 1-0 to Necaxa last weekend to remain winless on the road this season. The Licantropos’ lone win of the Apertura came at home, and they’ll look for a repeat performance as they return to the Estadio Universitario BUAP for this one. Lobos have one of the better defensive records to date, but they’ve also struggled for goals. They’ll look for their attack to come to life here. Lobos will also have the advantage of being better rested as they did not have a midweek game.

As for Atlas (17th), the Rojinegros fell 0-3 to Pumas UNAM last weekend to keep them winless this season. Atlas also has yet to score a goal in league play, although they did manage a 2-2 draw with Cruz Azul in the Copa MX in midweek. Atlas has had problems at both ends of the field; in addition to the worst attacking record, they’re died for the worst defensive record as well, having conceded six goals to date. Atlas will look to turn things around with an away win – or at least a goal – in this one.

León vs Querétaro – 8:00 PM – ESPN Deportes
León (16th) drew 1-1 with Tijuana last weekend to keep them winless this season. That draw did give them their first point, though, and they’ll look to build on that when they return home for this one. La Fiera has struggled to score this season, though, and they’ll need to find some firepower if they want to earn their first win. They will have the advantage of being better rested, as they did not have a midweek game.

As for Querétaro (11th), the Gallos Blancos fell 2-1 to Monterrey last weekend to end their unbeaten start to the season. They did get back to winning ways in midweek, though, where they beat Mineros 2-1 in the Copa MX, and they’ll look to build on that in this one. Querétaro has struggled to score almost as much as León has, however, with two goals to La Fiera’s one. They’ll look to change that here as they look to extend León’s poor start to the season.

Tigres UANL vs Toluca – 8:00 PM – Univision
Tigres UANL (5th) fell 1-0 to Cruz Azul last weekend to end their perfect start to the season. Tigres have a long home unbeaten streak still active, however, and they’ll look to get back to winning ways when they return home for this one. Tigres have conceded just one goal this season, and they posted a shutout in midweek as well with a 0-0 draw with Cafetaleros in the Copa MX. They haven’t done too much scoring of their own, however, as they’re averaging just a goal per game to date.

As for Toluca (8th), the Diablos Rojos drew 2-2 with Chivas de Guadalajara last weekend to keep them winless in two. They failed to win in midweek as well, where they suffered a 2-0 loss to Tijuana in the Copa MX. Beating Tigres at home is a tough challenge, and Toluca will be without their starting goalkeeper, Alfredo Talavera, who is serving a two-game suspension. They’ve scored at least once in all of their league games to date, though, and they’ll look to test Tigres’ stingy defense here.

América vs Monterrey – 10:00 PM – Univision Deportes
América (4th) beat Pachuca 1-3 last weekend to give them back-to-back victories. The Águilas will now look to make it three in a row when they return home to the Estadio Azteca for this one. They’re the second-highest scoring team in the league to date and they’ve scored three goals in both of their last two games; they’ll look to keep that pace up as they look to move further towards the top of the table. They were active in midweek as well, where they played out a 0-0 draw with Dorados in the Copa MX.

As for Monterrey (3rd), the Rayados beat Querétaro 2-1 last weekend to remain perfect this season. They won in midweek as well, where they beat Venados 0-3 in the Copa MX. Monterrey has only conceded one goal so far this season and they’ll look to halt América’s scoring streak here. The Rayados could move into first place with another win in this one, and they’ll look to keep their unbeaten start to the season alive.
