Apertura 2018 Week 4 Preview: Sunday’s Games

Pumas UNAM vs Pachuca – 5:00 PM – Univision Deportes
Pumas UNAM (1st) beat Atlas 3-0 last weekend to remain perfect this season. The universitarios did stumble in midweek, however, where they suffered a 1-3 loss to Necaxa in the Copa MX. Pumas will look to set that aside and refocus on league play here as they aim to extend their unbeaten start to the season and remain in first place. They have the best goalscoring record in the league with an impressive 10 goals from just three games, and they’ll look for more goals against a struggling team in this one.

As for Pachuca (18th), the Tuzos fell 1-3 to América last weekend to keep them winless this season. Pachuca has yet to pick up even a single point in league play, and they’ve only scored one goal – a penalty. The Tuzos are getting increasingly desperate to get their season on track, but an away game against the league leaders is not the ideal place to pick up a victory. They’ll hope to be underestimated here in search of a surprise win, and they’ll have the slight advantage of being a bit fresher after not having played a midweek game.

Chivas de Guadalajara vs Santos Laguna – 7:00 PM – Univision Deportes
Chivas de Guadalajara (14th) drew 2-2 with Toluca last weekend to keep them winless this season. That draw did give them their first point, though, which they’ll look to build on here. They drew in midweek as well, where they played out a 0-0 draw with Alebrijes de Oaxaca in the Copa MX. Chivas has found goals somewhat hard to come by this season, and they’ve been struggling at home for a long time; they failed to win a single home game in the Clausura 2018 and they lost their first home game of the Apertura as well. They’ll look to change that here as they search for their first win of the season.

As for Santos Laguna (6th), the Laguneros beat Puebla 2-0 last weekend to keep them perfect at home this season. Santos is winless on the road, though, but they’ll look to change that against a struggling team in this one. They were also active in the Copa MX in midweek, where they played out a 1-1 draw with Celaya. There is some turmoil surrounding the club, however, after coach Robert Siboldi and his entire staff abruptly resigned after a conflict with a player. Interim coach Salvador Reyes will be in charge for this one.

Tijuana vs Cruz Azul – 9:00 PM – Univision Deportes
Tijuana (10th) drew 1-1 with León last weekend to keep them winless in two. The Xolos are unbeaten at home, however, and they’ll look to get back to winning ways in the Estadio Caliente in this one. They did win in midweek, where they picked up a 2-0 victory against Toluca in the Copa MX. Tijuana has had some trouble with goals this season, though, and they’re averaging just one a game.

As for Cruz Azul (2nd), La Máquina beat Tigres UANL 1-0 last weekend to remain perfect this season. Cruz Azul has yet to concede a goal in league play, although they did give up a couple in midweek as they drew 2-2 with Atlas in the Copa MX. It’s just goal difference that’s keeping Cruz Azul out of first place, and they’ll look to keep the pressure on Pumas with another victory in this one.
