Apertura 2018 Week 8 Preview: Saturday’s Games

Cruz Azul vs Veracruz – 6:00 PM – Univision Deportes
Cruz Azul (1st) drew 1-1 with Santos Laguna last weekend to end a two-game winning streak but keep them unbeaten this season. They suffered their first loss in all competitions in midweek, though, where they fell 1-0 to Atlas in the Copa MX. La Máquina will look to remain unbeaten in league play – and remain in first place – with a victory against a struggling Veracruz side in this one. Cruz Azul has the best defensive record in the league, having conceded just two goals through seven games, and they have yet to allow a single goal at home.

As for Veracruz (15th), the Tiburones Rojos beat Tijuana 1-0 last weekend to end a two-game losing streak. They’ve struggled to score this season though, with just five goals total and just two on the road, which doesn’t bode well for them going up against the league’s best defense. Veracruz’s own defensive record is the worst in the league with 13 goals allowed, but they’ll try hope to surprise what may well be an over-confidant Cruz Azul side here.

León vs Pumas UNAM – 8:00 PM – Galavision
León (11th) beat Toluca 1-2 last weekend to give them back-to-back victories. La Fiera will look to make it three in a row (and four out of five) when they return home to the Nou Camp for this one. León’s attack has come to life in recent weeks, with eight goals in their last four games after scoring just once in their first three, and they’ll look to keep up the pace here. They’ll also have the advantage of not having played a midweek game.

As for Pumas UNAM (6th), the universitarios suffered a disappointing 2-2 draw in the Clásico Capitalino as they gave up a lead to 9-man América late on. That result keeps Pumas winless in four, and they failed to win in midweek as well, where they fell 1-0 to Necaxa in the Copa MX. Pumas will look to get back on track in this one, and they do have the second-best attacking record in the league, but they’ve been shut out in three of their last four games.

Tigres UANL vs Atlas – 8:00 PM – Univision
Tigres UANL (9th) drew 1-1 with Necaxa last weekend to remain unbeaten in two. The universitarios have just one win in their last five, though, although they did pick up a 1-0 victory against Cafetaleros in the Copa MX in midweek. But this game is a perfect opportunity for Tigres to get back on track as they face the league’s basement dwellers here. They’ve also had just about all of their success at home this season, and El Volcán is traditionally a difficult place for opponents to pick up points.

As for Atlas (18th), the Rojinegros fell 0-1 to Chivas de Guadalajara in the Clásico Tapatío last weekend to keep them winless this season. Atlas is goalless as well, having failed to score in league play to date, although they did manage a 1-0 victory against Cruz Azul in the Copa MX in midweek. They’ll hope for a similar result here, but they’ve looked quite toothless in the league so far and they’re facing a team that has given up just two goals at home this season.

Chivas de Guadalajara vs Pachuca – 10:00 PM – Univision
Chivas de Guadalajara (10th) beat Atlas 1-0 in the Clásico Tapatío last weekend to extend their winning streak to three games. They won in midweek as well, where they picked up a 1-2 victory against Monarcas Morelia in the Copa MX. El Rebaño has had some trouble at home this season – they have a better record on the road – but they’ll look to build on their recent successes as they look for their second home win of the season in this one.

As for Pachuca (12th), the Tuzos beat Puebla 2-0 last weekend to remain unbeaten in four. They avoided defeat in midweek as well, where they played out a 0-0 draw with Santos Laguna in the Copa MX. Pachuca has yet to win on the road this season, though, a statistic that they’ll look to change in this one. The Tuzos have the second-best defensive record in the league, but they’ve had some trouble at the other end; they’re averaging just a goal a game overall and less than that on the road.
