Necaxa vs Cruz Azul – Jornada 9 Recap and Highlights

Necaxa ended Cruz Azul’s unbeaten Apertura with a 2-0 victory on Saturday night. The result snaps a five-game winless streak for the Rayos – and keeps them unbeaten at home – while La Máquina suffered their first defeat of the season.

The hosts came out attacking as they looked to break down Cruz Azul’s league-leading defense. Their pressure paid off in the 21st minute, when Necaxa won a free kick just outside the box. Matías Fernández sent the free kick low under the wall to give the Rayos the 1-0 lead.

That goal woke up Cruz Azul, and the visitors began to press hard themselves, but Necaxa’s defense stood firm, with Brayan Beckeles looking particularly impressive as they stymied Cruz Azul’s attack.

In the second half, Necaxa sat back to defend while Cruz Azul continued to throw numbers forward as Pedro Caixinha made attack-minded substitutions. But La Máquina couldn’t find the breakthrough.

Then, in the 83rd minute, Rafael Baca fouled Víctor Dávila in the box, giving Necaxa a penalty kick. Dávila himself stepped up to take it and he converted it to make it 2-0 for the hosts and end Cruz Azul’s hopes of maintaining their unbeaten streak.

With the 2-0 win, Necaxa reaches 11 points while Cruz Azul still has 20.
