Cruz Azul came out attacking as they looked to put their first loss of the season behind them. They took the lead in the 18th minute, when Adrián Aldrete scored a golazo from outside the box as he recovered a loose ball in midfield, took it downfield, and then sent his shot from distance into the upper corner to make it 1-0.
Atlas struggled to muster any sort of response, but it took Cruz Azul until the second half to add an insurance goal. In the 56th minute, José Madueña tackled the ball away from the defense inside the box and back-heeled a pass to Milton Caraglio, who made no mistake with the finish. 2-0.
Atlas finally began to generate chances of their own in the closing minutes, with substitutes Clifford Aboagye and Jefferson Duque combining well. But they couldn’t get past Jesús Corona, who preserved the shutout.
With the 2-0 win, Cruz Azul reaches 23 points while Atlas still has two.
