Necaxa came out looking to defend their good home record, while Santos knew they had the opportunity to move into second place with a win. After trading chances, the visitors took the lead in the 22nd minute.
Dieter Villalpando gave the ball away, and Jesús Isijara took advantage, taking the ball down the right wing before sending in a pinpoint cross for Julio César Furch, whose header made it 0-1 for Santos.
Necaxa pressed for an equalizer and they made a pair of halftime substitutions as they looked for another dimension in attack. However, they did little to trouble Carlos Acevedo in goal.
The best chance for the hosts came in the 79th from a free kick from Matías Fernández, but Acevedo was able to make the save. Necaxa had the majority of possession, but they ultimately couldn’t make it count as they suffered their first home loss of the season.
With the 0-1 win, Santos reaches 21 points while Necaxa still has 11.
