Santos Laguna vs Atlas – Jornada 12 Recap and Highlights

Santos Laguna moved into first place in the table – pending the rest of this weekend’s games – with a 3-1 win against Atlas. The result is a second straight win for the Laguneros, who are unbeaten in four, while the Rojinegros were unable to build on last week’s result as they suffered their ninth loss of the season.

The hosts came out attacking and they took the lead in the 17th minute. Julio César Furch laid the ball off for Jonathan González, who took it into the box before sliding it back to an unmarked Furch, who made it 1-0.

Santos continued to dominate the game after taking the lead, but it wasn’t until the second half that they were able to add to their lead.

Soon after the restart, Ismael Govea was called for a foul just outside the box, which gave Santos a free kick in a dangerous area. Osvaldo Martínez took the free kick and deftly chipped it over the wall and past the keeper to make it 2-0 in the 47th minute.

Just two minutes later, Atlas was able to respond with a free kick of their own. Omar González got his head to the service to reduce the deficit to 2-1.

The visitors were unable to build on that goal, however, and instead Santos soon restored their two-goal lead. In the 56th minute, Jonathan Martínez headed home a corner kick to make it 3-1, adding a goal to his first-half assist to put the Guerreros comfortably ahead once more.

There was no coming back from that for Atlas, who remain rooted to the foot of the table.

With the 3-1 win, Santos reaches 24 points while Atlas still has five.
