Lobos BUAP took the lead but couldn’t hold it as Cruz Azul came from behind for a 2-1 home victory. The result guarantees La Máquina will finish the weekend in first place, and it also keeps them unbeaten at home this season, while the Licántropos saw their six-game unbeaten streak brought to a halt.
The game started off with a lot of possession for the hosts, but they initially struggled to turn it into dangerous chances. But as the game wore on they found a few opportunities through Elías Hernández and Édgar Méndez, who forced a good save out of Toño Rodríguez to keep the score 0-0.
Then, in the 19th minute, when Cruz Azul’s pressure was at its peak, Lobos mounted a lethal counterattack. Michaell Chirinos received the ball, took it down the wing, and sent a cross to the far post for Leonardo Ramos, whose header beat Jesús Corona to make it 0-1 for the visitors.
Cruz Azul kept their composure and kept attacking, and in the 32nd minute they found the equalizer. Lobos couldn’t clear their lines, first blocking a cross into the box that rebounded to Méndez, whose shot was blocked but bounced to Martín Cauteruccio, who volleyed it home to make it 1-1.
Then, just before halftime, the hosts completed the comeback. In the 42nd minute, Julio César Domínguez played in Hernández, who took the ball to the end-line before cutting a low cross back to the top of the six-yard box. José Madueña finished it off to make it 2-1 for La Máquina.
The second half was full of chances as Cruz Azul looked to add to their lead and Lobos looked to claw their way back into the game. They came as close as hitting the woodwork, when Leonardo Ramos headed the ball into the goal frame, but they ultimately couldn’t find an equalizer.
With the 2-1 win, Cruz Azul reaches 33 points while Lobos still have 16.
