Santos Laguna took the lead but couldn’t hold it as América came back for a 1-1 draw. The result keeps the Laguneros unbeaten at home this season but winless in two overall, while the Águilas are winless in three but unbeaten in 10.
The visitors had the first good chance of the game in the 9th minute, when Guido Rodríguez got past Osvaldo Martínez and tried his luck from distance, but Jonathan Orozco made the save. Santos responded with a chance from Eduar Preciado that Agustín Marchesin saved; Julio César Furch tried to finish off the rebound with a diving header, but his attempt went wide.
Then, in the 26th minute, Martínez had a good chance with his right-footed shot, but again Marchesin was alert to the danger, sending the ball out for a corner kick. Santos created further chances through “Gallo” Vázquez and Martínez again, but the game remained 0-0 at halftime.
But Santos kept the pressure on in the second half and in the 50th minute they got their reward. Brian Lozano sent in a corner kick and Furch headed it home to make it 1-0 for the hosts.
But the lead lasted just 10 minutes before América tied it up in similar fashion as Bruno Valdez out-jumped his defender and headed home a corner kick to make it 1-1 in the 60th minute.
Santos had a chance to retake the lead when Deinner Quiñones got through the defense and sent a cross in; Furch received it with his back to goal and laid it off for Jonathan Rodríguez, but his shot couldn’t find the target.
The Guerreros then went down to 10 men in the waning moments as José Javier Abella was sent off in stoppage time after receiving his second yellow card of the night for a foul on Cecilio Domínguez.
With the 1-1 draw, Santos reaches 29 points while América reaches 30.
