Monterrey wrapped up their regular season with a 3-1 victory against Atlas. The result keeps the Rayados unbeaten in three – and gives them a fourth straight home win – while the Rojinegros finish winless in four and winless on the road.
Monterrey had the better of the early chances, with Jesús Gallardo and Clifford Aboagye creating opportunities; then, in the 24th minute, the hosts were awarded a penalty kick following a handball in the box.
Nicolás Sánchez stepped up to take the spot kick, and he converted it with a low shot to his right to make it 1-0 for Monterrey.
The Rayados continued to press after taking the lead, with Rogelio Funes Mori, Rodolfo Pizarro, and Gallardo combining well and repeatedly testing José Hernández in goal, but they couldn’t add to their lead before halftime.
In the 56th minute, though, Monterrey made it 2-0. Funes Mori out-muscled his defender to bring down a long pass at the top of the box; he turned past Omar González and Leiton Jiménez and then fired to give the hosts the 2-0 lead.
Then, in the 78th minute, Luis Madrigal made it 3-0 with his low shot from outside the box to put Monterrey comfortably ahead.
Atlas managed a late consolation goal, though, as a cross was deflected by José María Basanta into the path of Jefferson Duque, who finished it off from the six-yard box to make it 3-1 in the 87th minute.
With the 3-1 win, Monterrey reaches 30 points while Atlas still has 11.
