Club América won a record-setting 13th Liga MX title with their 2-0 aggregate victory against Cruz Azul in the Apertura 2018 Gran Final.
After a 0-0 draw in the first leg, Edson Álvarez scored twice tonight, in the 50th and 89th minutes, to give the Águilas the series lead and with it, the title.
It took 140 minutes and a mistake to break the deadlock in this Clásico Joven final. Jesús Corona tried to play the ball short out of the back to Iván Marcone, but the defender lost the ball under pressure by Oribe Peralta; he played it to Edson Álvarez, who sent it into the upper left corner to make it 1-0 for América.
Cruz Azul never came particularly close to tying the game, and Álvarez’s second goal in the waning moments sealed the victory for the Águilas.
América previously won the league in the 1965-66, 1970-71, 1975-76, 1983-84, 1984-85, 1985-86, 1987-88, 1988-89, Verano 2002, Clausura 2005, Clausura 2013, and Apertura 2014 seasons.
