Club América announced the transfer of teenage sensation Diego Lainez to Spain’s Real Betis with an official statement.
Lainez, 18, made the move worth a reported $14 million just weeks after winning the Apertura 2018 title with the Águilas.
The winger has been on a upward trajectory since making his Liga MX debut in 2017 after playing for América’s youth teams. He drew international attention for his performance in the 2018 Toulon Tournament, where he was named the best player.
After shining in that U-21 event, he made his senior national team debut in Mexico’s September 2018 friendlies against Uruguay and the United States, and impressed in those matches as well.
Lainez will be joining compatriot Andrés Guardado, who has been with Betis since 2017, in a deal that runs through 2024.
América thanked Lainez for his commitment and dedication and the happiness he brought to the fans.
