Atlas vs América – Jornada 2 Recap and Highlights

América started their season as reigning champions with a 1-2 away win against Atlas. The result gets the Águilas’ Clausura 2019 off to a positive start, while the Rojinegros suffered their first loss of the young season.

The game was intense from the opening whistle, with América attacking and Atlas struggling to contain them. The hosts picked up a pair of early yellow cards for fouls that broke up América attacks, but Atlas also managed a a few chances of their own, with Andrés Santamaría having the most notable one with a shot that went just wide.

The best chances were América’s, though, and Cecilio Domínguez was particularly dangerous for the visitors. The breakthrough wouldn’t come, though, and as halftime approached América took their foot off the gas enough to allow Atlas a late opportunity that Agustín Marchesín parried away.

In the second half, América took the lead. Atlas lost the ball, with Renato Ibarra sending it to Henry Martín at the top of the box; he corralled it and sent it past José Hernández to make it 0-1 for the Águilas in the 56th minute.

They added to their lead in the 68th, when Domínguez fought his way through the midfield before taking a shot from outside the box that had enough of a deflection to leave Hernández stranded as it nestled into the net to make it 0-2.

Atlas managed a consolation goal in the 90th minute, when Osvaldo Martínez brought the ball down on his chest and volleyed it past Marchesín from outside the box to make it 1-2, but there wasn’t enough time left to push for anything more.

With the 1-2 win, América reaches three points while Atlas still has three.
