Cruz Azul vs Santos Laguna – Jornada 7 Recap and Highlights

Cruz Azul took the lead but couldn’t hold it as they fell 1-2 to Santos Laguna. The result gives the Laguneros their first road win of the season and keeps them unbeaten in two, while La Máquina remain winless in three.

The hosts started the game off well, and they had the first good chance through Orbelín Pineda, although Javier Abella made a timely tackle to intervene before he could get his shot away. Cruz Azul kept attacking, and they got their reward in the 22nd minute.

Adrián Aldrete played in Jonathan Rodríguez, who took the ball into the box before sending it across the face of goal for Milton Caraglio, who bundled it home to make it 1-0 for La Máquina.

The lead didn’t last long, however, with Santos tying the game in the 29th minute. The sequence started with a corner kick, which was cleared only to be sent right back in. Ulisas Rivas headed the ball towards goal, but his attempt hit the post; he kept the ball in play along the end line and sent it back into the mixer, where Hugo Nervo took a shot that finally found the net – with the help of a deflection – to make it 1-1.

The goal built the visitors’ confidence, and they had a chance to take the lead before halftime when Javier Correa found himself one-on-one with Jesús Corona, only to send his shot right to the keeper.

But Santos found the go-ahead goal just minutes into the second half. In the 46th minute, Pablo Aguilar poorly controlled a long pass he was trying to cut out, allowing the ball to slip past him where Eduar Preciado pounced on it and made it 1-2.

Cruz Azul look for a response but were ultimately unable to find one as they slumped to their second home loss of the season.

With the 1-2 win, Santos reaches 11 points while Cruz Azul still has eight.
