Veracruz snapped their seven-game scoreless streak but was unable to hold the lead as they drew 1-1 with Cruz Azul. The result keeps the Tiburones Rojos winless in the Clausura 2019, while La Máquina are now winless in four.
Veracruz came out looking to finally make their home field advantage count, and they had a good chance in just the 3rd minute. Colin Kazim-Richards sent a dangerous cross into the box for Cristian Menéndez, but he couldn’t get the final touch.
Cruz Azul then had a chance at the other end when Elías Hernández combined with Jonathan Rodríguez, but Sebastián Jurado did well to make the save on the Uruguayan.
Menéndez then forced a save out of Jesús Corona in the 23rd minute as Veracruz continued to knock on the door. Finally, in the 29th minute, Bryan Carrasco sent the ball into the box; Corona came off his line but couldn’t reach the ball, with Kazim-Richards heading it into the net to make it 1-0 for the hosts – and bring Veracruz’s 659-minute scoreless streak to an end.
In the second half, Jesús Paganoni came close to adding a second but that time Corona was able to intervene and send the ball out for a corner. Cruz Azul turned to their bench as they looked to spark their attack into life, and they got their reward in the 72nd minute.
Veracruz couldn’t clear a corner kick far enough, and it was sent back into the box; Milton Caraglio made contact and the ball deflected in off the unfortunate Fabricio Silva, who made it 1-1 with his own-goal.
Cruz Azul nearly went on to snatch a game winner, but Sebastián Jurado made several saves to preserve the draw, including an impressive kick-save on Igor Lichnovsky in the 78th minute.
With the 1-1 draw, Veracruz reaches three points while Cruz Azul reaches nine.
