Santos Laguna closed out Jornada 8 with a comprehensive 4-0 victory against 10-man Toluca. The result is a second straight win for the Laguneros, who remain unbeaten at home this season, while the Diablos Rojos have now lost two in a row and are winless in six.
Santos came out attacking and they had a good chance in the very first minute, only for Alfredo Talavera to intervene. But the keeper couldn’t do anything to stop Diego Valdés’s precise free kick in the 4th minute as the hosts took the early 1-0 lead.
Then, in the 22nd minute, Ayrton Preciado drove into the box and sent his low shot right through Talavera to make it 2-0 for Santos.
The night took a further turn for the worse for Toluca in the 32nd minute as, after VAR review, Santiago García was given a straight red card for a foul on Gerardo Arteaga, leaving the visitors to see out the rest of the game with just 10 men.
Minutes later, Adrián Mora was called for a foul in the box and Santos was given the chance to add to their lead from the penalty spot. Marcelo Correa stepped up to take the spot kick, and he converted it to make it 3-0 in the 36th minute.
Toluca made a pair of halftime substitutions as they looked to get back into the game, but they were unable to muster much of a comeback attempt.
Instead, in the 61st minute, Diego Valdés scored his second of the night when he pounced on a loose ball following a defensive breakdown, giving Santos the definitive 4-0 lead.
With the 4-0 win, Santos reaches 14 points while Toluca still has seven.
