Both teams had the lead at one time or another, but in the end Veracruz and Santos Laguna had to settle for a 2-2 draw. The result leaves the Tiburones Rojos still looking for their first win of the Clausura 2019, while the Laguneros remain winless in two.
The game started off well for the hosts, as Veracruz took the lead in the 8th minute. Santos couldn’t get the ball clear and a low cross from Jefferson Murillo reached Bryan Carrasco, who sent it into the back of the net to make it 1-0 for the Tiburones.
But Veracruz couldn’t hold on to the lead. In the 24th minute, Sebastián Jurado was able to block Marcelo Correa’s shot, but he could do nothing about the follow-up by Julio César Furch, who made it 1-1 against his former team.
Both teams had chances for a second, but it was the visitors who found it. In the 74th minute, Santos took the lead through Correa, who brought down a cross at the far post and sent it past the diving Jurado to make it 1-2.
Veracruz looked for a reaction, and in the 79th minute they found one. Diego Chávez leveled the game with his shot from just outside the box to give the hosts a lifeline.
In the waning moments, it seemed like Veracruz would snatch the lead back at the death. But Jonathan Orozco made a fantastic save, clawing away a shot from Cristian Menéndez that was centimeters away from crossing the line.
With the 2-2 draw, Veracruz reaches four points while Santos reaches 15.
