América earned a 3-0 victory against Tigres UANL to continue their climb up the table. The result gives the Águilas three wins in a row while the universitarios saw their eight-game unbeaten streak brought to a halt.
The game started off perfectly for the hosts, who took the lead in just the 5th minute. Bruno Valdez took advantage of an error by Nahuel Guzmán, who came off his line and got stranded, to finish off his own rebound off the crossbar and make it 1-0 for the Águilas.
Tigres looked to react and they had the better of possession as they pressed forward in search of an equalizer. In the 17th minute, Enner Valencia had a golden chance to tie the game when he received the ball unmarked in the box, but he couldn’t find the target.
Minutes later, Agustín Marchesín was called into action to keep América in front; then Tigres had a penalty shout turned down as the visitors continued to dominate in the final third.
They couldn’t find the breakthrough, however, and in the second half the game evened out before beginning to tilt back in América’s favor after the insertions of Henry Martín and Nicolás Benedetti.
In the 68th minute, América was able to add an insurance goal when Víctor Aguilera sent a free kick under the wall and past Nahuel Guzmán to make it 2-0.
The second goal took some of the wind out of Tigres’ sails, and the hosts were able to keep possession. In the waning minutes, Benedetti added an exclamation point to the win when he sent his shot in off the post to make it 3-0 in the 88th minute.
With the 3-0 win, América reaches 22 points while Tigres still have 26.
