Atlas grabbed a late goal to earn a 1-0 victory against Santos Laguna on Friday night. The result snaps a six-game losing streak for the Rojinegros, while giving the Laguneros back-to-back losses and keeping them winless in four.
The first half started off slowly, with little intensity. Atlas struggled to find clear chances in the final third, while Santos controlled possession but were unable to do much with it until the final few minutes. In the 37th, Brayan Garnica had a chance but Jesús Gómez cleared the ball off the line.
Then, in the 41st, Julio César Furch had a one-on-one opportunity against José Hernández, but the goalkeeper was able to make the save as the game remained 0-0 going into halftime.
In the second half, Atlas came out with more energy and began to tilt the game in their favor – although chances were still few and far between. In the 71st minute, Facundo Barceló had a dangerous header, but Jonathan Orozco made the save.
Then, in the 84th minute, the Rojinegros found the breakthrough. Jesús Isijara scored the game winner against his former team; his initial shot went right into the body of the goalkeeper, but he scooped up the rebound and fired it into the empty net to make it 1-0 for Atlas.
With the 1-0 win, Atlas reaches 13 points while Santos still has 15.
