A late goal gave Pumas UNAM a 1-0 victory against Tijuana. The result gives the universitarios two wins in their last three and keeps them unbeaten at home in three, while the Xolos have now lost three straight on the road.
Pumas started the game off better, and they controlled possession; however, they weren’t able to do much to test young goalkeeper Carlos Higuera, who was making his league debut for Tijuana. Of course, the visitors didn’t do much to test Alfredo Saldívar at the other end, either, and the game remained goalless at halftime.
Bruno Marioni made a pair of halftime subs as he looked to give Pumas a new dimension in attack, but the breakthrough still wouldn’t come. Tijuana began to create chances on the counterattack, and Ariel Nahuelpán had a pair of opportunities but couldn’t convert them.
Frustrations began to mount and the temperature rose both on the field and on the benches. Marioni ended up getting himself ejected from the sidelines in the 82nd minute as the game looked destined for a 0-0 draw.
Then, in the 85th minute, Pumas had a set piece opportunity with a corner kick, and Carlos González was there to head the ball home. 1-0.
With the 1-0 win, Pumas reach 16 points while Tijuana still has 22.
