León vs Atlas – Jornada 15 Recap and Highlights

León added to their record winning streak with a 5-2 victory against Atlas. The result is a 12th-straight win for La Fiera, while the Rojinegros have now lost two in a row.

León came out attacking and they kept the pressure on Atlas; José Hernández made several saves to keep Atlas in the game, but he couldn’t stop Ángel Mena in the 15th minute. Rubens Sambueza sent a cross to the far post and Mena ran in to stab the ball home: 1-0.

But after taking the lead, León relaxed, and Atlas began to find opportunities of their own. Jefferson Duque had a dangerous chance, but Rodolfo Cota made the save to keep León ahead.

The 1-0 lead persisted through halftime, but the floodgates opened in the second 45. In the 52nd minute, William Tesillo made it 2-0 for the hosts after Atlas failed to clear away a corner kick.

Atlas was able to reduce the deficit shortly after that, though, with Duque heading home a cross in the 60th minute to make it 2-1.

But León responded immediately, with Mena scoring his second of the game – and 14th of the season – in the 61st to make it 3-1.

The flurry of goals continued in the 67th minute, after Atlas won a penalty kick. Osvaldo Martínez stepped up to take the spot kick and he converted it to reduce the deficit to 3-2.

The visitors couldn’t fight back any further than that, though, and instead León found a pair of insurance goals. In the 78th minute, José Juan Macías sent his shot from just inside the box in off the underside of the crossbar to make it 4-2.

Minutes later, Luis Montes put the game to bed with his powerful low shot to make it 5-2 in the 82nd. There was no way back for Atlas as León’s historic season continues unabated.

With the 5-2 win, León reaches 38 points while Atlas still has 16.
