La Máquina came out attacking, knowing they needed at least two goals to overturn América’s first-leg lead. José Madueña had an early chance go just wide, while Jonathan Rodríguez found himself in dangerous positions multiple times, but was unable to convert any of his chances.
Cruz Azul kept the pressure on the Águilas throughout the half as they out-shot América 10-1, even coming as close as hitting the crossbar, but the breakthrough just wouldn’t come. But just minutes into the second half, they found the breakthrough.
Rodríguez received a pass at the top of the box, turned, and fired past Agustín Marchesín to make it 1-0 (2-3) in the 47th minute.
That goal gave Cruz Azul added impetus as they were now within one, while nerves started to become evident for América. The Águilas managed to put the ball in the back of the net against the run of play, but Orbelín Pineda’s would-be goal was disallowed for offside.
Tempers flared towards the end, with a stoppage-time confrontation resulting in a flurry of yellow cards. In the 95th minute, Cruz Azul had a last-gasp corner kick that even Jesús Corona came up for, but Marchesín made a goal-line save to preserve América’s aggregate victory in dramatic fashion.
With the 1-0 loss (3-2 aggregate win), América advances to the semifinals while Cruz Azul is eliminated.
