Gold Cup: Mexico vs Cuba – Recap and Highlights

Mexico made short work of Cuba in their 2019 Gold Cup opener as they scored early and often to pick up a 7-0 victory.

Mexico are one of the favorites to win the tournament, and no one expected Cuba to put up much resistance – and they didn’t. Uriel Antuna, a last-minute addition to the team in place of the injured Jorge Sánchez, finished off a rebound off the post in just the second minute to put Mexico up 1-0 with his first goal for the senior national team.

After that early goal, though, it took nearly half an hour for El Tri to get on the board again. In the 31st minute, Raúl Jiménez took the ball down the center of the box and easily made it 2-0.

Mexico picked up the pace after that, and in the 38th minute, Diego Reyes finished off a set piece to make it 3-0.

Antuna got on the board again just before halftime as he made it 4-0 for Mexico in the 44th minute.

El Tri picked up where they left off in the second half as Cuba continued to struggle. In the 64th minute, Jiménez scored his second to make it 5-0.

Then, in the 74th minute, Antuna had a chance to finish his hat-trick, but unselfishly slid the ball over to Alexis Vegas, who scored his first international goal to make it 6-0 for El Tri.

Antuna was able to get his hat-trick in the end, as he scored Mexico’s 7th of the night in the 80th minute to cap off a night to remember for the 21-year-old.

Both teams will be back in action on Wednesday, when Mexico faces Canada and Cuba takes on Martinique.
