The hosts had the first chance of the game, with Felipe Pardo getting into a dangerous spot, but his shot was deflected by Jair Pereira and went out for a corner kick. Querétaro created chances of their own, with Ayron del Valle forcing a save out of Alfredo Talavera, who also stopped an attempt by Alonso Escoboza.
Neither team could find the breakthrough in the first half, despite a few more chances at either end. In the second half, the Diablos Rojos looked more dangerous initially, but their final touch was lacking.
When Fabián Castillo came on in the 52nd minute, the game began to tilt Querétaro’s way. In the 65th minute, Castillo opened the scoring with a right-footed shot that found the upper corner to make it 0-1 for the Gallos Blancos.
The afternoon quickly went from bad to worse for Toluca when Rodrigo Salinas was red-carded following a hard foul on Castillo in the 70th minute.
It didn’t take Querétaro long to make their numerical advantage count. Just two minutes after Salinas was sent off, Del Valle played in Alsonso Escoboza, who made it 0-2.
Toluca was unable to muster a response as they slumped to a 0-2 loss to start their season.
With the 0-2 win, Querétaro reaches three points while Toluca still has zero.
