The hosts started the game off well and came close to opening the scoring in the 5th minute. Agustín Marchesín came off his line to cut out a long ball into the box, but failed to deal with it; Luis Montes got to the ball but couldn’t put it on frame.
Then, in the 14th minute, good interplay by León worked the ball into the box for Ángel Mena, only for Bruno Valdez to make a last-second intervention to keep Mena from getting the shot away.
The chances kept coming for La Fiera. In the 26th minute, Joel Campbell got behind the defense but couldn’t get his attempt on target; in the 36th, Jean Meneses sent a dangerous ball to the back post that was just out of the reach of a stretching Mena. Then, in the final moments of the half, Marchesín made a good save on Montes to keep the game goalless.
In the second half, chances became scarcer for León, while the Águilas continued to struggle in the final third. In the 59th minute, América had a chance through Nico Castillo, but he couldn’t get enough power on his shot to make things tricky for Rodolfo Cota.
There was some controversy in the 71st minute, when Roger Martínez went down in the box and the referee pointed to the penalty spot. However, after consulting VAR, the decision was overturned: no penalty.
In the 81st minute, Fernando Navarro was sent off for a hard tackle on Jorge Sánchez, leaving León to see out the final 10 minutes with 10 men. América wasn’t able to take advantage of their numerical advantage, however, and the game remained stubbornly goalless to the end.
With the 0-0 draw, León and América both reach four points.
