Rubens Sambueza made his debut with Pachuca but couldn’t help the Tuzos get on track as they fell 1-2 to Monarcas Morelia. The result gives the michoacanos their first victory of the season while the Tuzos remain winless.
Pachuca came out attacking as they looked to get their season on track in front of their home fans, and Franco Jara had an early opportunity to put them ahead – and become the Tuzos’ all-time leading goal-scorer – but it came to naught.
Despite Pachuca’s pressure, it was Morelia who opened the scoring. The breakthrough came shortly before halftime, with Mario Osuna back-heeling the ball to Edinson Flores at the top of the box; Flores made no mistake with his finish, giving Monarcas the 0-1 lead in the 42nd minute.
The second half was a cagey affair until the 78th minute, when Aldo Rocha got free in midfield, drove towards goal, and sent a long-range low shot bouncing past the diving Rodrigo Rey to make it 0-2 for Morelia.
That looked to have decided it, but Pachuca reduced the deficit late to make for an interesting finale. In the 86th minute, the unfortunate Gabriel Achilier stuck out a foot to cut out a cross and ended up redirecting it into his own net to make it 1-2 with his own-goal.
Pachuca wasn’t able to go on to find an equalizer, however, and Morelia held on for the win.
With the 1-2 win, Morelia reaches three points while Pachuca still has one.
