Santos Laguna vs Puebla – Jornada 4 Recap and Highlights

Despite going down to 10 men, Santos picked up an emphatic 4-1 victory against Puebla. The result makes it four straight wins for the Laguneros, while the Poblanos are still searching for their first victory.

Santos came out attacking and they had an early opportunity through Adrián Lozano, whose shot hit the crossbar. It was only a matter of time before the hosts found the breakthrough, and it came in the 15th minute. From a corner kick, Ulíses Rivera headed the ball home at the far post to put Santos ahead, 1-0.

The second goal came just before the half-hour mark. Eryc Castillo got free on the left and cut past Alejandro Chumacero to get into the box, where he sent a low ball in for Julio César Furch to knock home. 2-0 in the 29th minute.

They could have had a third when Adrián Lozano went one-on-one with Nicolás Vikonis, but the keeper was able to make the save.

Then, in stoppage time, the complexion of the game appeared to change. After VAR review, Matheus Doria was red-carded for hitting Jesús Zavala in the head with an elbow; as the foul occurred in the box, Puebla was awarded a penalty kick.

Matías Alustiza stepped up to take it and, in the 8th minute of stoppage time, converted it to reduce the deficit to 2-1.

Within striking distance and with an extra man, Puebla no doubt was feeling confident at the start of the second half. But instead it was Santos who struck just minutes after the restart. In the 48th minute, the referee pointed to the spot again, but this time in favor of the hosts after Néstor Vidrio brought down Furch in the box.

Furch stepped up and converted the PK to make it 3-1 for Santos.

Puebla pressed for a response, but even playing with 10 Santos managed to control the game. Then, in the 88th minute, they sealed the victory as Diego Valdés made it 4-1 with his shot from the top of the six-yard box.

With the 4-1 win, Santos reaches 12 points while Puebla still has one.
