The visitors looked the better side from the start, while Atlas struggled to keep possession or string passes together. Their best chance of the half came in the 10th minute with a shot by Lorenzo Reyes; other than that, it was all Cruz Azul.
Cruz Azul’s dominance paid off in the 25th minute, when Milton Caraglio sprung Orbelín Pineda with a perfect through ball. Pineda ran on to it and beat the onrushing keeper at the top of the box to make it 0-1 for La Máquina.
Caraglio got on the board himself in first-half stoppage time, when he headed home a free kick from Adrián Aldrete to make it 0-2.
Then, just the other side of halftime, the visitors earned a penalty when Martín Nervo fouled Édgar Méndez in the box. Caraglio stepped up to take it, and he converted it to make it 0-3 in the 47th minute.
Atlas tried to generate a response, and slowly they started to get into the game. In the 70th minute, they were able to reduce the deficit from a set piece when Jorge Segura headed home a free kick to make it 1-3.
The hosts were unable to fight back further than that, though, and Cruz Azul held on for a comfortable victory.
With the 1-3 win, Cruz Azul reaches eight points while Atlas still has nine.
