León vs Chivas de Guadalajara – Jornada 5 Recap & Highlights

Chivas de Guadalajara’s comeback attempt fell just short as León held on for a 4-3 victory. The result keeps La Fiera unbeaten at home this season, while ending a three-game unbeaten run for El Rebaño.

León started the game off strongly and they kept the ball in the visitors’ defensive third. Then, in the 16th minute, Josécarlos van Rankin brought down Jean Meneses in the box and León had the chance to open the scoring from the penalty spot. José Juan Macías took and converted the PK to give the hosts the 1-0 lead.

Chivas looked for a response and they could have had a penalty of their own in the 25th minute for a potential handball in the box, but after VAR review it was determined there was no infraction.

Chivas continued to press, though, and in the 38th minute, Alan Pulido scored from outside the box to tie the game 1-1.

But León reclaimed the lead before halftime. In the 45th minute, Meneses sent a cross towards the far post, where an unmarked Ángel Mena headed it home to make it 2-1.

León kept that momentum going in the second half. They controlled possession and attacked with intent, which led to them winning another penalty kick in the 63rd minute. Macías stepped up again and buried it again to make it 3-1 for the hosts.

They ran the score up further in the 70th minute, with Yairo Moreno taking the ball into the box and beating the onrushing Toño Rodríguez; the assistant initially signaled for offside, but after VAR review the goal stood, making it 4-1 for León.

The hosts looked to be in complete control, but Chivas managed to make things interesting. In the 77th minute, Alan Pulido won a penalty kick after a foul in the box; he stepped up himself and converted it to reduce the deficit to 4-2.

Then, deep in stoppage time, Alexis Vega brought Chivas within touching distance as he drove into the box, rounded the onrushing Rodolfo Cota, and slotted the ball home to make it 4-3. There wasn’t enough time for them to go on to find an equalizer, though, and León held on for the win.

With the 4-3 win, León reaches seven points while Chivas still has seven.
