América vs Monarcas Morelia – Jornada 5 Recap & Highlights

América remained perfect at home with a 1-0 victory against Monarcas Morelia. The result keeps the Águilas unbeaten in the Apertura and extends their winning streak to three games, while the michoacanos have now lost two in a row.

Morelia started the game off well, with an early chance through Fernando Aristeguieta, but he put his shot wide. América had more of the possession after that, although they struggled to do much with it; goal-scoring opportunities were few and far between for most of the first 45.

Miguel Herrera made an early change, bringing on Nicolás Benedetti in the 33rd minute, and he went to his bench again at halftime, with Víctor Aguilera coming on. The intensity picked up, and by the hour mark chances were beginning to appear at both ends.

Andrés Ibargüen created a pair of good opportunities for the Águilas, but the final touch was lacking. As time wore on, the game looked destined to end in a goalless draw – and then, América struck.

In the 80th minute, Benedetti and Roger Martínez worked the ball into the box, with Benedetti finishing it off to make it 1-0 for the hosts. The play went to VAR, though, as Martínez appeared to make contact with defender Gabriel Achilier in the buildup and there was a question of if the goal should be disallowed for a foul. But in the end, it stood, and it was just enough as América walked away with the 1-0 win.

With the 1-0 win, América reaches 13 points while Morelia still has three.
