Monterrey vs Toluca – Jornada 5 Recap & Highlights

Monterrey remained perfect at home with a 2-0 victory against Toluca. The result gives the Rayados three straight wins, while the Diablos Rojos have now lost three in a row and remain winless in the Apertura.

Monterrey started the game off strongly, and dominated play against a Toluca side that still hasn’t managed to get into gear. The Rayados created chance after chance, and were stopped by the woodwork before finding the breakthrough in the 21st minute.

A set piece gave the hosts the lead, with Miguel Layún scoring direct from a long free kick with the help of a bounce as the ball passed everyone to touch down inside the six-yard box and ricochet past the diving keeper. 1-0.

Toluca struggled to react, while Monterrey kept control of the ball and had a few chances to add to their lead. It wasn’t until the second half that they were able to make it two, though.

In the 55th minute, another free kick proved to be Toluca’s undoing. Nicolás Sánchez, facing away from goal, headed the ball backwards past Alfredo Talavera to make it 2-0 and put the Rayados firmly in the driver’s seat.

The atmosphere in the Estadio BBVA Bancomer was festive and became even more so when new signing Vincent Janssen made his debut in the 72nd minute. The Dutchman had a good chance to score soon after that, but he sent his shot high in the 75th minute.

With the 2-0 win, Monterrey reaches nine points while Toluca still has one.
