Leagues Cup: América vs Tigres UANL – Recap and Highlights

Tigres UANL scored a last-second equalizer to tie América 2-2 and send this semifinal to a penalty shootout; the universitarios then bested the Águilas 5-3 from the spot to earn their place in the final of the inaugural Leagues Cup.

Tigres started the game on the front foot, and their attacking pressure soon paid off. In the 14th minute, Jürgen Damm got past Jesús López on the wing and sent a low cross into the box. The unfortunate Paul Aguilar sent the ball into the back of his own net when he tried to cut out the cross, making it 0-1 for Tigres with his own-goal.

Tigres seemed comfortably in control after that goal, and they came close to adding a second several times. But just past the half-hour mark, América got a lifeline when Carlos Salcedo was called for a push on Roger Martínez in the box. After VAR review, América was awarded a penalty kick, and Andrés Ibargüen converted it to tie the game 1-1.

The second half started slowly, but soon Tigres began to look dangerous again, especially their substitutes Luis Quiñones and André-Pierre Gignac. But just when it seemed like a matter of time before the universitarios scored, América found the breakthrough.

In the 83rd minute, Ibargüen got the ball in midfield and drove towards goal; Nahuel Guzmán got a hand to his shot from the top of the box, but he couldn’t keep it out as the Águilas took the 2-1 lead.

There was more drama to come, though. Roger Martínez was red-carded in the 90th minute for contact with Guido Pizarro; then, deep in stoppage time – in the 95th minute – Tigres tied it up. Bruno Valdez tried to head away a long throw from Luis Rodríguez, but only succeeded in sending it into his own net. The own-goal made it 2-2 and sent the game to a shootout.

André-Pierre Gignac, Enner Valencia, Luis Quiñones, Luis Rodríguez, and Carlos Salcedo all converted their kicks for Tigres, while América had makes from Guido Rodríguez, Bruno Valdez and Paul Aguilar, but a miss from Leonel López.

With the 2-2 draw (5-3 shootout win), Tigres advance to the final while América is eliminated.
