Santos Laguna returned to the top of the table, at least temporarily, with their 2-1 win against Monterrey. The result keeps the Laguneros perfect at home this season, while the Rayados saw their three-game winning streak brought to a halt.
The game started off perfectly for Santos, who took the lead moments after kickoff. With just 1:29 on the clock, Julio César Furch pounced on a loose ball in the box and put it away after Monterrey failed to clear a long throw-in. 1-0 for the hosts.
While Monterrey was trying to adjust to being behind so early, Santos added a second goal. The Rayados lost the ball while trying to play out of the back, and after a scramble in the box, Eryc Castillo made it 2-0 in the 5th minute.
Santos continued to dominante the game, but they were unable to finish off any more of the opportunities they created.
In the 84th minute, Monterrey was able to grab a consolation goal as Vincent Janssen, who was making his debut for the Rayados, finished off a rebound given up by Jonathan Orozco to make it 2-1.
The reaction was too little, too late for the visitors though, and they weren’t able to go on to find a second goal.
With the 2-1 win, Santos reaches 15 points while Monterrey still has nine.
