Despite a late red card, Atlas earned a 3-0 victory against América. The result snaps a three-game winless streak for the Rojinegros, while the Águilas suffered their first loss of the Apertura 2019 season.
In the first half, Atlas controlled the majority of possession, but it was América that had the better chances. In the 14th minute, Renato Ibarra went one-on-one with the keeper but wasted the opportunity; later, Atlas thought they should’ve had a penalty for handball on Paul Aguilar, but after VAR review the protests were waved away.
Just before halftime, Atlas took the lead. In the 45th minute, a hopeful cross into the area led to a goal from Jesús Isijara, whose defender slipped and left him unmarked to head the ball past Memo Ochoa. 1-0.
During the interval, Miguel Herrera was ejected from the bench, leaving the Águilas to start the second half without a coach on the sidelines. América’s best opportunity to get back into the game came through Roger Martínez, but his attempt hit the post.
In the 63rd minute, Ismael Govea headed home a free kick to make it 2-0 for Atlas and put the hosts comfortably in control.
In the 86th minute, Hugo Nervo was sent off after VAR review for a hard challenge on Guido Rodríguez, but there wasn’t enough time left for América to make their numerical advantage count.
Instead, deep in stoppage time, Atlas added a third goal on the counterattack, with Christopher Trejo taking off from within his own half, taking the ball all the way into the box, and firing past Ochoa to make it 3-0 in the 96th minute.
With the 3-0 win, Atlas reaches 13 points while América still has 15.
