Chivas de Guadalajara vs Atlas – Jornada 9 Recap & Highlights

Chivas de Guadalajara took the bragging rights in the Apertura 2019 edition of the Clásico Tapatío with a 1-0 victory against 10-man Atlas. The result keeps El Rebaño unbeaten in two while the Rojinegros saw their three-game unbeaten streak halted.

The hosts started the game off strongly and kept the ball largely in Atlas’s defensive third. Their first chance came in the 7th minute through Dieter Villalpando, but his shot was easily saved by Camilo Vargas. In the 11th minute, Villalpando created a dangerous opportunity that Isaác Brizuela was unable to convert.

That was the theme of the half, with Chivas creating opportunities but lacking the finishing touch.

There were also two controversial non-calls in the first half, with an apparent handball by Miguel Ángel Ponce going unmarked in Guadalajara’s box, and then an apparent foul by Lorenzo Reyes on Villalpando also going uncalled.

In the second half, Atlas regrouped and started off strongly, with Facundo Barceló having a good opportunity in the 50th minute, but the game remained deadlocked at 0-0.

Then, in the 63rd minute, a bit of individual brilliance gave Chivas the lead. Alexis Vega opened the scoring with a powerful shot from outside the box that Vargas got a hand to but was unable to keep out. 1-0 for the hosts.

The night took another turn for the worse for Atlas in the 80th minute, when Jorge Segura was sent off with his second yellow card of the game. The visitors nevertheless persisted in search of an equalizer, but in the end they couldn’t find the breakthrough.

With the 1-0 win, Chivas reaches 11 points while Atlas still has 13.
