It was honors even in the Apertura 2019 Clásico Capitalino as América and Pumas UNAM played out a 1-1 draw. The result keeps the Águilas unbeaten at home this season, but also keeps them winless in four overall, while the universitarios remain unbeaten in two.
The game took an early turn for the worse for the hosts as Francisco Córdova was sent off in just the 17th minute after a studs-up tackle on Juan Pablo Vigón, leaving América to play the majority of the game with just 10 on the field.
Despite their numerical advantage, though, Pumas was unable to take control of the game. The visitors created just one clear chance in the first half, and Carlos González couldn’t capitalize on it.
With América still firmly in the game, Miguel Herrera made several attacking substitutions and one of them paid dividends. Federico Viñas entered the game in the 77th minute and scored immediately, pouncing on a loose ball in the box to make it 1-0 for the Águilas.
But the hosts had barely finished celebrating the lead before Pumas tied it up. In the 80th minute, Pumas had a corner kick; América cleared it away, but only as far as Bryan Mendoza, whose shot from outside the box slipped past Memo Ochoa to make it 1-1.
Neither team could find a winner in the time remaining, and the two had to settle for a share of the spoils.
With the 1-1 draw, América reaches 16 points while Pumas reach 13.
