Toluca’s struggles continued with a 0-2 home loss to Monarcas Morelia. The result is a second straight loss for the Diablos Rojos and keeps them winless in three, while the michoacanos have now won two in a row and are unbeaten in four.
The game started off evenly, with neither team able to dominate. Chances were few and far between in the first half, although what there was tended to go Morelia’s way. Toluca’s first opportunity of note didn’t come until the 40th minute, and their best opportunity – when Aníbal Chalá went one-on-one with Sebastián Sosa – was wasted.
In the second half, Morelia came ever closer to a goal until Luis Mendoza opened the scoring in the 71st minute. “Quick” made his former team pay as he finished off a give-and-go with Edison Flores to make it 0-1 for the visitors.
Almost immediately, Morelia added to their lead as Flores played in Fernando Aristiguieta, who finished off the pass to make it 0-2 for La Monarquía.
Toluca was unable to respond after conceding two goals in as many minutes, and Morelia easily saw out the remainder of the game while the home fans began to protest against the continued tenure of coach Ricardo La Volpe.
With the 0-2 win, Morelia 13 reaches points while Toluca still has five.
