Santos Laguna took an early lead and fought off Atlético San Luis’s comeback attempt to earn a 2-3 away win. The result keeps the Laguneros unbeaten in four while the Potosinos saw their two-game winning streak and five-game unbeaten streak halted.
It took the visitors just seven minutes to find the breakthrough. Julio César Furch, the league’s leading goalscorer, netted his 8th of the season when he finished off a low cross at the back post to make it 0-1 for Santos Laguna.
But San Luis reacted quickly, and in the 13th minute they tied the game. Nicolás Ibáñez headed home a long ball into the box to knot it up at 1-1.
The frenetic pace of the game continued, though, and Santos retook the lead almost immediately. In the 15th minute, Adrián Lozano finished off a rebound given up by Carlos Felipe Rodríguez to put the Guerreros back in front, 1-2.
Then, in the 35th minute, VAR review awarded the hosts a penalty kick after Eryc Castillo was called for a foul in the box. Ían González stepped up to take the spot kick, and he converted it to tie the game once again.
The game remained tied going into halftime, and the second half started off as even as the scoreboard, with neither side able to dominate. But in the 63rd minute, Santos once again retook the lead.
Brian Lozano put Santos back in front, this time definitively, with a long-range shot that beat a diving Rodríguez to make it 2-3. San Luis was unable to find another equalizer, and Santos held on to move back into first place in the table.
With the 2-3 win, Santos reaches 20 points while San Luis still has 14.
