Cruz Azul took the lead but couldn’t hold it as Pumas UNAM scored late to tie the game 1-1. The result keeps the universitarios unbeaten in three while La Máquina are also unbeaten in three but remain winless in five after a run of draws.
Cruz Azul, coming off winning the new Leagues Cup competition in midweek, was looking to get back to winning ways in league play as well, while Pumas looked to put their home-field advantage to good use in their quest to climb into the playoff places. The hosts had some good early opportunities created by the partnership of Jeison Angulo and Victor Malcorra, but they weren’t able to open the scoring.
Cruz Azul nearly grabbed the lead in the 24th minute. Milton Caraglio’s shot was blocked by the defense but the rebound fell for Pablo Aguilar – who hit the post.
It wasn’t until the second half that the breakthrough came. In the 48th minute, Jonathan Rodríguez went one-on-one with Alfredo Saldívar in the box and sent his shot to the far post to make it 0-1 for Cruz Azul.
Pumas looked for a response, but Cruz Azul stymied them time and again. But the visitors weren’t able to add an insurance goal, which came back to bite them in the final minutes.
Just as a 0-1 win was looking inevitable, Juan Iturbe tied it up with a golazo as his shot from distance found the upper corner in the 88th minute.
With the 1-1 draw, Pumas reach 14 points while Cruz Azul reaches 12.
