Santos Laguna vs Veracruz – Jornada 11 Recap & Highlights

Santos Laguna steamrolled past an increasingly toothless Veracruz to the tune of a 5-0 win. The result keeps the Laguneros unbeaten in five and lifts them back into first place in the table, while the Tiburones Rojos remain rooted to the foot of the table as their record-setting winless streak grew to 37 games.

Santos looked dangerous from the start and they continually knocked on the door before finding the breakthrough in the 18th minute. Eryc Castillo opened the scoring for the hosts after Diego Valdés played him in behind the defense.

Veracruz looked to shore up their defense after that, and they managed to keep the deficit to 1-0 for the rest of the half. But in the second half, the floodgates opened.

In the 52nd minute, Matheus Doria finished off a poorly-defended corner kick to make it 2-0 for the Guerreros; just three minutes after that, Brian Lozano scored direct form a long-range free kick to make it 3-0.

Santos suffered a potential setback in the 69th minute after Fernando Gorriarán was red-carded – with the help of VAR review – for a studs-up foul on Daniel Villalva, but Veracruz was unable to do anything with their numerical advantage.

Instead, the hosts continued to run up the score. In the 75th minute, Valdés scored with a nice curving shot from outside the box to make it 4-0.

The final nail in the coffin came in the 86th minute, when the unfortunate Carlos Salcido scored an own-goal after miscommunication with Sebastián Jurado ended with his intended back-pass bypassing the keeper and finding the back of the net. 5-0.

With the 5-0 win, Santos reaches 23 points while Veracruz still has two.
