An open first half saw chances at both ends, but when the breakthrough came it was for the hosts. In the 29th minute, Víctor Guzmán received the ball on the left, drove into the box, cut past his defender, and fired past Jesús Corona to make it 1-0 for Pachuca.
Cruz Azul came close to an equalizer, but they were denied by the crossbar. They continued to push forward in the second half, but they couldn’t get past the defense and Rodrigo Rey in goal.
Instead, Franco Jara added an insurance goal for Pachuca in the 83rd minute. With Cruz Azul playing high up the field, Pachuca had a four-on-two breakaway, and they took full advantage to make it 2-0.
Jara had the ball in the net again in stoppage time, but his would-be goal was disallowed for a foul in the buildup.
Then, in the 92nd minute, Cruz Azul had a chance to reduce the deficit when they were awarded a penalty after a handball in the box. But Milton Caraglio sent the spot kick into the stands to keep the score 2-0 in Pachuca’s favor.
With the 2-0 win, Pachuca reaches 18 points while Cruz Azul still has 13.
