Veracruz vs Toluca – Jornada 12 Recap & Highlights

Veracruz was just minutes away from their first win in more than a year when Kevin Castañeda scored the equalizer for Toluca. The 1-1 result extends the Tiburones Rojos’ winless streak to 38 games while the Diablos Rojos remain unbeaten in three.

Veracruz came out attacking as they looked to end both their record-setting winless streak and a run of five games without a goal. They had more chances, but not many dangerous ones. Toluca struggled to get going in the final third as well, with a lack of creativity hampering the visitors.

The game looked destined to end in a goalless draw when Veracruz was thrown a lifeline in the 73rd minute. Luis Hernández kicked Diego Chávez in the face as the two contested a cross to the far post, and after VAR review, the referee pointed to the penalty spot.

Bryan Carrasco stepped up to take the PK, and Alfredo Talavera saved it – but Carrasco put away the rebound to put Veracruz ahead, 1-0.

Veracruz fought hard to protect that lead and they did so right up until the 94th minute. Kevin Castañeda, one of the young players subbed on in the second half, scored from distance to tie the game 1-1 and increase Veracruz’s misery.

With the 1-1 draw, Veracruz reaches three points while Toluca reaches 12.
